Position Summary: The Instructor of Clarinet will provide individual instruction to Interlochen Arts Academy (IAA) clarinet students, coach sectionals for the IAA orchestra and wind symphony, participate in side-by-side rehearsals with the large ensembles, actively and collaboratively recruit prospective students to the Academy (and help with recruitment to Interlochen Arts Camp as appropriate), and teach other courses as assigned. The Instructor of Clarinet will provide student mentorship and advising for aspiring artists in a boarding school setting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teach private lessons to Interlochen Arts Academy clarinet students
Coach chamber music and participate in all woodwind area activities
Coach sectionals for Orchestra and Wind Symphony
When applicable, teach courses in the Music Division as deemed appropriate
Lead a student advisory section
Provide appropriate grading, attendance and evaluations of student progress as required by the music division
Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administration
Collaborate with other clarinet and woodwind faculty members
Actively recruit clarinet students collaboratively with other faculty, staff and administration
Teach the whole student, working with other faculty and colleagues
Assist students with the college application process
Perform on the faculty chamber music series
Assist with the assessment of school owned instruments
Participate in departmental and employee meetings and serve on committees as directed
Complies with ICA policies/procedures and acts as a good steward of ICA finances.
Respects the culture, diversity and rights of all students, their families and the community.
Prioritizes duties in a manner consistent with organizational objectives and growth.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
Work is performed at various sites throughout the campus and classroom environment with extensive internal and external stakeholder contact.
Skills and Abilities:
Education: Master’s degree in clarinet performance required or commensurate with professional experience.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of significant teaching experience at the college level and/or with high school students.
Equipment/Software Familiarity: Mac, Google Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Mail, Calendar), Canvas
Certifications, Licenses or Special Training:
Must meet and maintain background screening requirements for as detailed in policy 12.HR.01 Pre-Employment and Employee Background Checks.
Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets the eligibility requirements of ICA’s insurance carrier (for all positions requiring driving).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated excellence as a professional clarinetist, with a record of significant achievements in solo, chamber music, and large ensemble settings
Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute positively to the overall artistic environment at Interlochen.
Possess a genuine passion for education and a commitment to fostering the artistic growth and well-being of students.
Strong communication skills, both in one-on-one interactions with students and in broader musical community engagement.
