Position Overview
Elk Rapids Marina is seeking a skilled and dependable Barge Operator to safely operate, navigate, and maintain a company barge used in marine service operations throughout Northern Michigan’s waterways.
The Barge Operator plays a key role in hoist installation at residential waterfront properties. This position is responsible for safely operating the company barge, transporting the barge and trailer, and coordinating hoist installations alongside our dock installation teams. The ideal candidate is safety-minded, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working on the water in varying conditions.
Full-time candidates will assist our service department year-round with mechanical services and boat hauling when the barge is not in operation. Part-time work is seasonal, with the busiest periods in the spring and fall, with flexible on-call availability during the summer.
Key Responsibilities
Barge Operation & Navigation

  • Safely captain and maneuver the company barge while installing and removing customer hoists.
  • Safely transport and load/unload the barge at various boat ramps.
  • Plan and execute routes while accounting for weather and boat traffic.
 
 
 
Equipment & Maintenance
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance on the barges engines, hydraulics, and onboard systems.
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, and gear are properly secured, maintained, and ready for operation.
  • Report any mechanical or technical issues promptly to the service department.
 
Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all marina safety policies, maritime navigation rules, and environmental practices.
  • Maintain awareness of operational hazards and take proactive measures to ensure safety for all crew and vessels.
Coordination & Communication
  • Work closely with the dock and service departments to support marine operations.
  • Maintain clear communication with management, customers, and vendors while representing Elk Rapids Marina professionally.
  • Accurately document operational activities and maintenance records as required.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Prior experience operating boats, barges, or similar marine vessels preferred.
  • Working knowledge of basic navigation and seamanship principles.
  • Good driving record and ability to safely tow and launch large trailers using company trucks.
  • Mechanical aptitude and basic understanding of marine systems.
  • Ability to work long hours outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical capability to perform manual labor and properly handle marine equipment.
  • Formal maritime training or certification (such as a Merchant Mariner Credential) preferred but not required.
