March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of early detection and screening in the fight against colorectal cancer.
Colorectal cancer is a major health concern for both men and women, ranking as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. The American Cancer Society’s estimates about 107,320 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed in 2025, (54,510 in men and 52,810 in women). While colorectal cancer affects people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, the risk increases with age.
A colonoscopy remains the most effective screening method, as it can detect and remove precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer. Health experts recommend that individuals aged 45 and older—or those with risk factors—talk to their primary care provider about screening options. With regular screening and early detection, colorectal cancer is highly preventable and treatable.
